Few of us could do what Daniel Suelo does. He lives with no finances, no money, and no means to make a living, either. Yet he is not a homeless person, is college educated, has a degree in anthropology, and worked for the Peace Corps. Yet for all intents and purposes, he may be the greenest person on the planet.
He lives in a cave up a trail in the Utah mountains, and walks down to the small town of Moab where he dumpster-dives for usable garbage, be it food or material things like gloves or old boots, and then he will make his way to the local library and blog about his lifestyle! That’s right, he actually blogs about what it is like to live without money or monetary funds of any sort.
Like the Native Americans of old, he lives off the land, eating wild plants, insects and animals when he can find them. He will even eat fresh roadkill if he can find it, and truth be told, he has never missed a meal. He bathes in the small stream down the path from his cave, and gets his drinking water from there too.
He has become popular from living in monetary abstinence, being interviewed by such places as Tree Hugger, the Huffington Post and many others. Everyone, it appears, is curious to know how and why he does it, why he has forsaken the ways of money, and how he survives out in the wilderness.
His ways are pure, and he takes nothing he doesn’t need or cannot use. And when you think about that, it is that kind of lifestyle where the green movement ultimately came from. It is the epitome of recycle and reuse.
His case is unique as he has no other direct worldly ties, like a spouse or children, so he can do this by himself and live the way he chooses to live. Although it would be virtually impossible to be the same way, there are things that we can take from his lifestyle and incorporate them into ours.
He is 48, healthy and strong, and he eats what he can get, mostly wild and organic foods. His active lifestyle keeps him lean, and although to most of us looking in, his diet may make us a little queasy, but it pretty much proves that eating organic foods of any kind is a very healthy way to exist.
He has nothing that is not useful for his life, no frivolous things, no luxury items, nothing wasted, and that can be a lesson to all of us. We are all so caught up in material splendor that most of what we own will end up in a landfill. Even if it doesn’t break down and we just get tired of it, it will usually just get tossed out and end up as trash.
Daniel Suelo counts on people like you and I to throw out things like this, because although there is no money traded for anything he finds in a dumpster, that transaction always makes him richer than he was before.
We can all take a cue from Mr Suelo, specifically reuse and recycle. Always think about donating or finding someone else to use what you might consider trash, but what others might consider gold. Because Action speaks louder than words, Daniel Suelo, a man with no means, is not only preaching the green life, but living it like no one else.
