The Green Depot

Eco-shopping for peace of mind

Wouldn’t it be nice to go into a store that features nothing but green and sustainable products? No, we aren’t talking about a co-op, but an actual department store where all the goods on sale were evaluated to fit into any green lifestyle? Well, the Green Depot will let you do just that!

Located in several cities across the country, their flagship store is located in Manhattan, with showrooms in Albany, Chicago, and Philadelphia. These stores may be the first of their kind, with their unique concept featuring cleaning supplies, energy and lighting products, and a complete green baby section.

They are so bio-friendly that the flagship store has even applied for a platinum level LEED certificate. The certificate is offered by an independent third-party verifying that the building is an environmentally friendly, profitable, and healthy place to live or work.

Above and beyond that, the Green Depot offers some very good ideas and responsible products, such as refillable cleaning containers. You merely purchase the original container complete with a bio-friendly cleaner, and then when you need more, you get the container refilled. That means you are only paying for the cleaner, while reusing the container and keeping it out of a landfill.

Another mainstay are the sales of zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints. Up until recently, they were the only way that paints could meet performance standards. That is no longer true, with natural formulations for paint made from soy, milk protein and natural mineral oils.

Perhaps the best part of all is their commitment to natural or organic baby products. They feature nothing but the best in the way of nontoxic products for babies, from woolen mattresses to BPA-free bottles (Bisphenol-A, a chemical that leaches into and shows up in some baby bottles) to organic cotton bibs and diapers.

The Green Depots are expanding and growing, with plans to open in even more cities nationwide and bring sustainable department stores mainstream, with unique and bio-friendly products for everyone.

Founder Sarah Beatty gets all the credit here. She has taken an incredibly green idea and turned it into the reality of The Green Depot, allowing people from all walks of life to have a chance to go green, one step at a time, Because Action speaks louder than words!

More and more, and I see this all the time, green product prices are coming on-line with regular prices. In many cases, although the prices may be a bit higher, the price per usable portion is virtually the same, so in essence, you may pay more in the short run, but in the long run you are either breaking even or coming out ahead. Thanks for the comments!

Yes, this is a great idea. It would be nice if the "green" industry would reduce the prices of their products so we could actually afford them though.
